Why Is a Healthy Spine
So Important?

Our body is controlled and coordinated by the central nervous system which is made up of our brain and spinal cord. The brain acts as the control center for all functions of our body. The spinal cord relays messages from the brain to all our muscles, organs and tissues through tiny nerves passing out of small holes (joints) in our spine. The spinal cord and all exiting nerves are protected by our spine, which is made up of 24 moveable vertebrae. These vertebrae help us bend, twist, flex and move freely without compromising our nerves.

If our spine is not moving freely then we have what is called a “spinal subluxation.” A spinal subluxation is when 2 or more vertebrae have lost normal motion and/or position. When this happens there can be interruption to normal nerve flow causing the messages going from the brain to all of the cells in our body to become compromised. Less than 10% of our nervous system perceives pain; therefore, one can have a subluxation without any pain or symptoms. Often pain may not be felt in the neck or back, but in the area where the nerve exiting is sending messages to, such as our muscles, joints or organs. Chiropractors aim to assist the body’s natural healing process by re-establishing nerve flow to its optimum level. This is done by restoring movement and proper alignment back into to spine with a chiropractic adjustment.
